Notes
[…]" [sic] (... I hope [to hear] as quickly as possible about the Indépendants,1  as I am making a triptych for it, which absorbs me enormously. ...) (Philippe Smit 1920a)

[sic] (... and for the Nationale des beaux-arts[2] one has to appear before a jury, and imagine that I am turned down, that I have a chance! ... for my triptych is not finished yet, I work until out of breath. Here it is bitterly cold. Right now I am in the studio and the wind blows from all sides. Ah, you would like what I am making right now. I will explain to you as Dine and Nico do not know yet. It is the mystical and pagan legend of a vagabond. The first very narrow panel shows the vagabond buried in a snow storm. The second very big: a path and a heather landscape and in this landscape a gibbet with a dying Christ and to the right in the same panel the mystical resurrection of the vagabond, and pine trees with flying ravens, and the day which is dying. The third: the heavenly ascension of the vagabond carried by the archangels, turning toward the bursts of heavenly light and leaving the landscape and the wood. As if religious and pagan art are joined in this pictorial poem ...) (Philippe Smit 1920b)

"[...] We all are in good health. Philippe made, after the Pieta, a new painting: legend of a Vagabond, a triptych - very delicate. A large painting ± 3 meters. The most delicate painting in the world and of his oeuvre. [...]"3

"[…] Yet, this painted page of the gospel4 is just a prelude for another work, a triptych, where the unconscious body of the dead Christ of the other painting – a body still full of pain, fatigue, still warm with love and ecstasy – lives again his pains, his sadness, his agonies, and his glory, but quite differently. Not just to pay tribute to the prophets and for the glorification of the will of the heavenly Father but as a simultaneously magnificent and modest beatification of life and nature, which together recreate endlessly and desperately the horrible tragedy of Man […]"5 (Jacobus Smit 1920 (post -))
