Notes
(... and after this, my dear, this horrible Pietà which haunts me day and night, as Rollinat does also ...) (Philippe Smit 1919a)

[sic] (My very dear René, you will excuse my silence but I was so very much preoccupied with my Pieta, it really dazes me, and I am sick to death of it.  I am trying to make a Christ for our time. For Rembrandt and Greco made a Christ with their immense brilliance. Though I come after them.  And these are thoughts, thoughts and the strokes of the brush which become impossible, so much do I fear not being able to express what I feel. Because what a difference between a dream and the need to give it a face which expresses the endless kindness, the suffering, the devoted ecstasy, and all this gets lost in the infinity of the dream. Oh, this drives me crazy, and then I want to grasp genius, and even it cannot help me. Now you can imagine my poor loneliness ...) (Philippe Smit 1919b)

[…]" [sic] (... You must think “Philipp does not write to me often”, but finally I have finished my Pieta, a painting dark and tragic, which groups it with the most sorrowful paintings of dark Spain. My health was suffering from it, I got a bit ill. ...) (Philippe Smit 1919c)

[...]" [sic] (... for the Nationale des beaux-arts1 one has to appear before a jury, and imagine that I am turned down, that I have a chance! Then all the expenses since the paintings are not small. For, a work like the Piéta takes up as much space as a wagon, but I will send something smaller. ...) (Philippe Smit 1920b)

"[…] Among others, he painted a picture, ꞌThe Burial of Christ’s Bodyꞌ, which delighted and also terrified me by its simultaneously human and divine beauty. One sees there the two women, but what women! One is my dear dead child [Emma] who came back, back from higher heavens, and the lily of her lovely feet touches delicately the mourning broom shrubs of the earth only to render to the unconscious body of the Man the salvation of her gaze, whose ecstatic glow wanders through space, while prolonging it with the infinity of her love. The winged appearance of this Mary (whose supernatural face has the whiteness of flowers, the clarity of the stars and the tenderness of a teardrop of God) is leaning with compassion, mingling with all the human pains, on the other Mary [Berendina], the Mary Magdalene, and no woman is more Woman than these, a priestess of Life, Love, Nature and Culture. Earth and heaven meet in the two figures who, with unconscious gestures and the silent words of their moistened eyes, confirm the bottomless and unlimited justice in this heart-breaking tragedy of Christ. Yet, this painted page of the gospel is just a prelude for another work, a triptych2. […]"3 (Jacobus Smit 1920 (post -))

2. Legend of a Vagabond [PS 211].
