Notes
Named after his father, the son of Berendina and Nicolaas Urban was born in Bussum in 1907. The boy suffered from a genetic disorder affecting his cognitive and physical abilities called Pettigrew syndrome and died in 1928 in an institution in Heemstede, where he had lived since 1919. Nicknamed Broertje, he was the subject of several paintings. Without doubt Philippe Smit was inspired by him also for The Innocent [PS 207].

Additional images
Broertje and his sister Marijke (see PS 84) with their nanny (photograph, c. 1912-13, private archives, Paris).
