Notes

John Ross Moyer (1903-1994) commanding officer and later captain of the Service Battery 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery served in World War II in the United States and in Europe. In 1945 he and one of his fellow soldiers happened to meet Philippe Smit. Occasionally invited to dinner at Thoury-Ferrottes Moyer was truly intrigued by Smit’s works. Moyer expressed a wish to have a portrait of Smit, and the artist soon gave him a sketch of himself as a memento.
