Notes
During World War II Philippe Smit, having taken refuge in the town of Pau, obtained a safe-conduct allowing him to go to Bagnères-de-Bigorre, known for its thermal baths, at the foot of the Pyrenees, from 8th July to 26th August 1942.
The church of Beaudéan, represented in the pastel, is very close to this spa town, and it was during this visit that the painter was able to execute this work.
