Notes
Philippe Smit, who has visited Ommen in the province of Overijssel on several occasions, was less interested in the view of the town than in the surrounding countryside with its old farms and haystacks. See also [PS 427]. The Dutch haystack, a rather unique construction, was once a free-standing building used to store fodder for livestock. It consists of 4 wooden posts with a thatched roof that can be raised and lowered.
